There is a huge misconception that prints are not polished enough for the office. All over America, offices are filled with individuals outfitted in neutral colored solids. Now don’t get me wrong- I love neutrals! However in the sea of gray and black attire, prints help you to stand apart. I am a huge believer that workwear does not have to be boring. Sure, maintaining a professional appearance can be a little limiting but it isn’t impossible. Pairing prints with solid, classic pieces is an easy way to create a professional yet stylish look.

The printed pants in this outfit is an example of how I would wear prints to the office. I paired it with a black top however virtually any color would work. A solid top allows the pants to be the star of the show while balancing out the outfit. I love how versatile these pants are. The classic color combination allows for an infinite amount of styling options. It looks great with black, monochrome or bright shoes.

Motivational Monday: Back to Work

Hi Everyone! We are nearing the end of August.  And you know what that means- time for back to school. It’s been a while since I’ve been in school therefore I don’t know if I can offer any helpful back to school tips. Instead, I decided to take some time to speak to the ladies that are going into the workforce. It’s not the same however I feel like I can relate to her more. I worked in Corporate America for over 10 years and have learned quite a bit during that time. Here are some of my tips:

  1. Work Hard, Play Hard. One of the things that I struggled with is proper work/play balance. There were many weeks I thought I would just drop from sheer exhaustion. I worked early mornings and late nights just to work through the weekend. I felt like a zombie. I realized that my stress level was affecting my relationships. I never completely mastered the skill however I did learn to take breaks to help clear my mind.
  2. Ask Questions and Offer Solutions. This is something that I learned from one of my supervisors. She let me know that it is ok to ask questions and voice concerns however it is also good to offer up solutions. I found that my supervisor was happier to hear from me when she knew I wasn’t there just to complain and ask questions.
  3. Get Organized. This is a very important skill to have. I find that when I am organized, I am more efficient. Try to get into the habit of organizing everything from your work, work space, mind, etc. If possible, try to set aside some time each week to get organized. It will save you from being a frazzled mess.

To the girl that is not working in her desired field but has accepted a position in order to pay her bills- I know how difficult it can be. My best advice to you is to make the best of your time at your position. Learn as many skills as you can (they may come in handy when you are ready to make your transition). Lastly, stay focused. Try to connect with professionals in your desired field. Who says you can’t have a side hustle while working your 9-5?!

DIY Hair & Body Oil

DIY HAIR & BODY OIL| Moments With Millie

I was in the process of whipping up a batch of my hair and body oil and thought I would share my recipe with you. As you may know,  I have dry hair and skin. 😦 I have tried so many products to help alleviate the dryness. For me, there hasn’t been one item that has completely eradicated the dry skin. I find that I have to use a combination of things to see results. I often use the oil for hot oil treatments, to moisturize my hair, to moisturize my skin, as a cuticle treatment, etc. Do you use oils to moisturize your skin? Let me know which are your favorites.

35%  Olive Oil -(Adds moisture to the scalp and skin, makes hair soft and shiny, has antibacterial and anti-fungal properties that fight off common scalp and hair problems).

25%  Coconut Oil -(Naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal, an excellent moisturizer, and can penetrate hair better than many oils and smells great).

20%  Sweet Almond Oil- (Rich in Vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids, proteins, potassium and zinc, excellent moisturizer, and also smells great).

10%  Jamaican Black Castor Oil* (Moisturizes, thickens, strengthens and rapidly increases hair growth. JBCO increases blood flow to the scalp, supplying valuable nutrients to hair follicles)

10%  Jojoba Oil (The only oil that closely resembles human sebum, it is anti- bacterial and anti-inflammatory. Jojoba oil is an excellent moisturizer and emollient).

* I use this interchangeably with Haitian Black Castor Oil when available.

Rapid Review: Caudalie Makeup Remover Cleansing Water

Caudalie Makeup Cleansing Water| Moments With Millie

Hi Everyone! I am back with another Rapid Review. This time I am reviewing the Caudalie Makeup Remover Cleansing Water. I featured this in my New In: Spring Beauty Goodies post. As you may have noticed cleansing/micellar waters are all the rage this year. I was really skeptical about them however I decided to give them a try after I stumbled across this particular one. Since Caudalie is a well respected skin care brand I figured I was in good hands. Below are my thoughts. Have you used any cleansing/micellar waters? What are your thoughts on them?

  1. Price-  $4.97 (Nordstrom Rack)
  2. Use(s)- This soap-free cleansing water effectively removes make-up from face and eyes, as well as cleanses and tones skin.
  3. Product Claims- Make-up Remover Cleansing Water soothes, moisturizes and softens skin. With a gentle Micellar cleansing base, make-up is easily removed without rubbing, and face and eyes are left thoroughly clean. The improved formula is now more natural, more effective and gentler on skin. Fresh fragrance includes orange and lemon blossom, watermelon and mint leaves. Make-up Remover Cleansing Water is non-irritating to even the most sensitive skin types.
  4. My Thoughts- I really like this cleansing water. It is very gentle yet effective at removing face makeup. I would say it is not the best at removing mascara and eyeliner. Although I am not vegan, I do love that it is a plant based product.

P.S. I hope you enjoy this format for product reviews. You can review my previous Rapid Review post here.

Favorite E. L. F. Products

I learned about Eyes Lips Face Cosmetics while reading a beauty magazine back in 2007. I believe their products were only available online at the time.  I was really intrigued by their products because of the rave reviews they had received. At the time, I was low on funds therefore their low prices was a real draw to me. I believe the first product I purchased from them was their cream liner. I was hooked ever since then. Although I’ve had to pass on some of their items, I have found some real gems. In no particular order, below are some of my favorite Elf products. What are your favorites?

Motivational Monday: Going Through Tunnels

As far back as I can remember, I’ve always had a vivid imagination. I gravitated to the arts and was really into things such as music, dance, poetry, etc. Flash forward to two years ago, I decided to create this blog as a creative outlet. I had so many ideas floating in my mind and needed a way to get them out. Starting a beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog seemed like a natural fit. Except for one thing- I hate taking pictures. Like many people, I am overly critical of myself. It doesn’t help that I am a Virgo (perfectionist) and a little bit of a control freak.

I started using Polyvore as a tool for creating outfit inspiration. While it has been a great tool, it is not as effective as I would like. Sure, the site is a virtual dream closet with a large array of clothing/accessory pieces however it does not allow viewers to see the outfits on an actual person. The collages are very aesthetically pleasing however they lack the ability to make a personal connection. Over time,  looming in the back of my mind was the realization that in order to take my blog to the next step, I had to model the outfits for my posts. In other words, I had to go through the tunnel.

Going through tunnels can be a little scary. They are dark and confining. Many people speed through them which add to the anxiety factor. The kicker is however scary they are, you have to go through them to get to where you are going.

Last Sunday, I casually mentioned to my husband that I would like to start taking pictures for my blog. I said I could go to Sephora to get my makeup done (for free) and head over to a nearby location to take pictures. He said, “that’s a great idea!”. I didn’t expect him to say he was off the next day and would be more than happy to take the pictures. I instantly panicked because I knew  I would have to go through with it. You see, hubby tends to be one of the few people that can actually hold my feet to the fire.

I woke up Monday morning half excited and half scared. I decided to take my time to get dressed and put on makeup. As a result, we arrived to our destination a little later than I hoped but we quickly proceeded to take pictures. While taking pictures all I could think about was how uncomfortable with taking pictures. What’s worse is I forgot my belt and accessories.  Needless to say, I was feeling a little defeated by the time we had wrapped. As we started to make our way back to the car, my photographer (aka hubby) started to goof off by snapping a few pictures as if he was a paparazzi. After looking at those set of pictures I realized that I didn’t look as bad as I thought I did. No, my outfit wasn’t perfect but I got through the tunnel. And it wasn’t until I let go of my fears that we captured my favorite picture from the shoot:

Someone once told me that the greatest reward in life come from doing things that scare you the most. I couldn’t agree with that more. Change is uncomfortable but the only way to get passed your fears/insecurities is to go through the tunnel. Thank you for reading this unusually long post. Your reward is more pictures of me from the shoot.  🙂

Instant Chic

Instant Chic

Hi Everyone! I hope you are doing well! I am at a stage in my life where my personal style is evolving. More and more I find myself drawn to an effortlessly chic esthetic. Below are a few of the items that I have found helpful in achieving that look.
1. Leather/Faux Leather Jacket- Oh leather jackets how I love thee! Let me count the ways: 1. they are slimming, 2. provide warmth, 3. create modesty, etc.  Best of all, a leather jacket has the ability to transform a ho-hum outfit into a chic one. I also love how it instantly adds a little edge to anything it is paired with. Be sure to look for a timeless leather jacket that is appropriate for your figure.
2. Sunglasses- Sunnies are another multi-purpose closet staple. They protect our eyes from the sun and those unsightly under eye bags. Sunglasses have always had a cool factor about them. My favorite styles are aviator and cat eye.
3. Red Lipstick- A bold blue based red lipstick can take your look from drab to fab in an instant. Paired with oversized sunnies is the easiest way to look chic.
4. Black Booties- Booties have the ability to add some edginess to an otherwise plain outfit. I prefer the open-toed version as they are perfect year round.
5. Winged Eyeliner-A winged eyeliner can take your makeup from pretty to chic. Now, if I could only master how to create the asme liner for both eyes.

Love of My Life: Old School

Hi Everyone-

I am back again with more of my current favorites. This time I am featuring some of my favorite music. After putting together this list, I noticed all of the songs have an old school feel to them. What can I say? I am an old soul.

  1. Christine and The Queens- Christine. Although this is a french song, I love how catchy it is. It has a real Michael Jackson vibe. My french is a bit rusty but from what I can make out, the lyrics do not make any sense. However I think that is part of the song’s charm.
  2. Guordan Banks- Can I Keep You in Mind. Anyone that knows me knows that I love old school R&B. And this song has a great throw back vibe to it. I can not wait to hear more from Guordan.
  3. Ro James- Permission. Speaking of old school music, this song has a real funk R&B vibe to it. It is very reminiscent of the late great Prince.
  4. Janet Jackson- Dammn Baby. Mrs. Jackson is back with another album. I love this song. It is classic Janet (uptempo, positive message and fun).
  5. Fantasia- No Time For It. Fantasia also has a new album and I am here for it. Although I like a few of her new songs, this one makes the list because of the message. She has no time for the negativity!
  6. Maxwell- Lake By The Ocean. Maxwell is finally back (after a 7 year hiatus). Although his latest single is reminiscent of his last album, it is still a banger. It is a great song to listen to while driving.
  7. Alicia Keys- In Common. I love this song! It has a caribbean vibe to it. It is perfect for the summer.

Day to Night

I can tell you how I feel about you night and day……. 🎶 How many of you remember the song I’m referring to? I would tell you which decade it is from but that would really show my age. 😜

Speaking of age- they say with age comes wisdom. Well wisdom has taught me the importance of having  keys items in your wardrobe. Pieces such as t-shirts, blazers, black pumps, a good pair of jeans and a LBD (little black dress) are the building blocks for any wardrobe. Their versatility can take you from day to night. I am quite a frugalnista however I now spend a little more on these items because of the amount of use you get of them.

The outfit below is an example of how a staple piece (in this case a blazer) can take you from day to night. What are some of your staple wardrobe items?
